Home » Blog » Stairlift vs. Through-Floor Lift: Which Should You Choose?

When climbing the stairs becomes a daily challenge, it’s natural to start thinking about adapting your home. Two of the most popular solutions are stairlifts and through-floor lifts, but they work very differently, and the right choice depends on your individual needs, your home’s layout, and your longer-term plans. Read more for a practical guide to help you understand both options.

What Is a Stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorised chair that travels along a rail fixed to your staircase, carrying you safely between floors. Stairlifts are available for straight staircases, as well as curved or narrow ones, making them a versatile option for a wide range of homes.

They’re typically the faster and more affordable solution to install, and because the rail is fitted to the stairs themselves rather than the structure of your home, they’re less disruptive to put in. Most stairlifts fold neatly against the wall when not in use, leaving the stairs accessible for other members of the household.

Stairlifts tend to suit people who:

  • Can sit comfortably and transfer in and out of a seat independently or with minimal assistance
  • Want a cost-effective, quick-to-install solution
  • Have a staircase in reasonable condition
  • Are looking for a solution that doesn’t permanently alter the structure of their home

What Is a Through-Floor Lift?

A through-floor lift, sometimes called a home lift or vertical platform lift, travels straight up through the ceiling between floors, enclosed in a self-supporting shaft. Unlike a stairlift, it doesn’t rely on the staircase at all.

Through-floor lifts can accommodate wheelchairs and powerchairs, making them the preferred choice for anyone who cannot transfer out of their chair. They require more structural work during installation and tend to be more expensive, but they offer a greater level of independence for those with more complex mobility needs.

Through-floor lifts tend to suit people who:

  • Use a wheelchair or powerchair and cannot transfer easily
  • Require a carer to accompany them between floors
  • Looking for a longer-term, future-proofed solution
  • Have space to accommodate a shaft on both floors

Which Should You Choose?

If you’re able to walk to the foot of the stairs and transfer into a seat, a stairlift is usually the most practical and affordable first step. They’re quick to install, straightforward to use, and can make a significant difference to daily life without major disruption.

If you rely on a wheelchair full-time, or if your mobility is likely to change significantly over time, a through-floor lift may be the better long-term investment. It removes the need to transfer at all, and it means your home remains accessible regardless of how your needs evolve.

It’s also worth considering whether other adaptations, such as moving a bedroom downstairs, might suit your situation better. A professional assessment can help you weigh all the options.

Who needs to buy online? I can't praise this fantastic local business highly enough for the exceptional customer service they provide. Alex and Hailey are both very helpful, friendly and honest. The setting up of the insurance and added extras are most appreciated. Many thanks, I will highly recommend you to others.

Excellent Customer Service from Alex, Hayley and Mike at ARB Mobility. They couldn't have done more to help me. My broken elderly Rollator was soon sorted and back in use again. It's such a 'find' to have someone who can mend things. They are knowledgeable and in tune with all manner of mobility issues and have a well stocked showroom catering for a broad range of needs. The scooter we chose and ordered was available for us to collect within 48 hours, all set up and ready to go. We can't thank them enough for all their help and can thoroughly recommend ARB Mobility of Ruishton to anyone who needs any of theirmobil

Absolutely brilliant!! Alex was fantastic! I was looking at getting a top of the range power wheelchair with an NHS voucher and top up. Alex arranged a home visit with the company, they were both friendly but professional and personable, as a disabled female, it can be quite daunting to have two men come to your home but I can hand on heart say what lovely chaps! Together they talked me through the benefit of this wheelchair but also any cons. I was in the process of arranging the money when Alex contacted me to say an ex demo one was available. It was a few £k cheaper but it was almost brand spanking new and would be modified FOC to my specs. Alex and the supplier came to adjust it to me on delivery and made sure I was happy with controls, how it worked and that everything was comfortable before they left. Alex, you’re an absolute legend!

It was clear from the outset that ARB Mobility had an impressive, wide range of mobility scooters on offer, and in a very short time identified a scooter that suited my needs. The proprietors were kind, courteous and above all, friendly. Sterling all round service! I would most certainly recommend this company. Thank you.

Alex and the team are very local to us and he is a great guy to help out when needed. My wife and I are relatively new to this scooter business but in a short time we have found that there seems to be quite a few unreliable suppliers online with very poor customer service. That is the opposite of what we have experienced with Alex and we don't mind paying a bit extra compared to online when we get such kind, reliable service.

We needed a mobility scooter and wheelchair but we didn’t know which ones would be most suitable. Alex was very helpful in helping us decide on the best options and we are pleased that we have bought from him. Wonderful service and no hard sell - he was just trying to do the best for us. Thanks Alex.
