Manual wheelchair design has advanced rapidly in recent years, and more people are now choosing to buy a wheelchair for occasional use rather than waiting until they require one full-time.

One such person is 60-year-old Steve Ashworth from Taunton, who recently upgraded to the Rehasense ICON 60 wheelchair from local specialists ARB Mobility. Here’s how it changed his day-to-day independence.

Why He Avoided a Wheelchair at First

Steve lost his left leg above the knee in 1981 due to bone cancer. With the help of a prosthetic limb, he remained independent for decades — but long distances gradually became harder as he aged.

Despite friends encouraging him, Steve resisted using a wheelchair:

“I used to manage most walks, but as I’ve got older, long distances became more difficult. I kept putting it off.”

He eventually began hiring a wheelchair for holidays, but found hiring expensive and unreliable.

Visiting ARB Mobility in Taunton and choosing the Rehasence ICON 60

When Steve’s previous wheelchair needed replacing, he visited ARB Mobility, where mobility expert Alex Boon recommended the Rehasense ICON 60.

“I’m still fairly mobile and don’t need a wheelchair all the time, but having the ICON 60 means I can go places that would otherwise be out of reach,” Steve said.

The ICON 60 is ideal for travel and everyday use making it the Perfect Fit for Steve

Steve travels frequently, so reliability and easy transportation were essential:

“It’s extremely well built, very easy to manoeuvre and folds down quickly for transport. Over the last 18 months, it’s been with me to America, Canada and Norway. The off-road tyres Alex recommended were brilliant.”

“I would not hesitate to recommend the Rehasense ICON 60 — and the service from Alex at ARB Mobility has been second to none.”
