When it comes to mobility aids, a wheelchair is often an essential part of everyday life for many individuals. However, not all wheelchairs are created equal. Some are designed for basic mobility, while others are built for specific needs and activities. One such specialized type of wheelchair is the active wheelchair. But what exactly is an active wheelchair, and how does it differ from traditional options?

What is an Active Wheelchair?

An active wheelchair is a mobility device designed to enhance the user’s mobility, independence, and overall quality of life. Unlike standard wheelchairs, active wheelchairs are more lightweight, customisable and optimised for performance, whether that means being able to manoeuvre quickly, engage in sports, or simply navigate various terrains with ease.

Different Types of Frames for Active Wheelchairs and Their Benefits

When it comes to choosing the right active wheelchair, the frame is one of the most important considerations. The frame determines the wheelchair’s overall performance, durability, and suitability for the user’s specific needs.

  1. Rigid Frame Wheelchairs

           What is a Rigid Frame?

A rigid frame active wheelchair features a solid, one-piece construction without any folding or pivoting mechanisms. This type of frame is built for individuals who need a lightweight,                      high-performance chair that offers stability, strength, and precise handling.

PROGEO JOKER ENERGY WHEELCHAIR

Benefits of Rigid Frame Active Wheelchairs:

  • Lightweight and Strong: Rigid frame wheelchairs are typically made from lightweight yet durable materials like aluminium or titanium, which ensures easy manoeuvrability without sacrificing strength.
  • Improved Performance: With fewer parts that can cause flexing or give, rigid frames offer superior handling, responsiveness, and control. This makes them ideal for sports enthusiasts or individuals who require quick and agile movement.
  • Enhanced Durability: Since there are fewer moving parts and no folding mechanism, rigid frame wheelchairs are more durable and require less maintenance over time.
  • Better Power Transfer: The solid construction of rigid frames allows for more efficient power transfer from the user to the wheels, making it easier to propel and move quickly, which is ideal for active individuals.

 2.  Folding Frame Wheelchairs

        What is a Folding Frame?

While rigid frame wheelchairs are designed for high performance, a folding frame active wheelchair allows the user to fold the chair for easier transport and storage. The frame typically folds at the seat or the backrest, making it more compact and convenient for people who travel or need to store their wheelchair frequently.

PROGEO TEKNA ADVANCE WHEELCHAIR

Benefits of Folding Frame Active Wheelchairs:

  • Portability: The ability to fold the chair down makes it much easier to transport and store, especially for individuals who need to take their wheelchair in and out of vehicles or public transportation.
  • Flexibility and Convenience: Folding frame active wheelchairs are ideal for users who need a balance between performance and practicality. They allow users to quickly collapse and store the chair when not in use, without compromising too much on performance.

Materials Used for Active Wheelchair Frames and Their Benefits

When selecting an active wheelchair, one of the key factors that influence its performance, weight, durability, and comfort is the material used in the frame. The material affects the wheelchair’s overall functionality, making it essential to choose the right one based on your lifestyle, needs, and preferences. The frame material plays a significant role in ensuring mobility, strength, and agility.

1. Aluminium

What is Aluminium?

Aluminium is one of the most common materials used for wheelchair frames due to its versatility, lightweight properties, and cost-effectiveness. It is often chosen for active wheelchairs because it strikes a balance between durability and weight.

Benefits of Aluminum Frames:

  • Lightweight: Aluminium is a lightweight metal, which makes wheelchairs made from this material easier to manoeuvre, push, and lift. The reduced weight can significantly improve the user’s mobility and independence.
  • Affordability: Compared to other materials like titanium or carbon fibre, aluminium is more affordable. This makes it an attractive option for individuals seeking a quality active wheelchair without the high price tag.
  • Strength and Durability: Aluminium is known for its strength and resistance to corrosion. While it’s not as strong as titanium, it still offers great durability for daily use and active tasks.
  • Customization: Aluminium can be easily moulded into various shapes and configurations, allowing for greater customization to suit individual user needs, such as adjusting the chair’s geometry or adding extra features.

2. Titanium

What is Titanium?

Titanium is a premium material known for its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio. It’s lighter than steel but more robust and durable, making it an excellent choice for high-performance active wheelchairs.

Benefits of Titanium Frames:

  • Exceptional Strength and Durability: Titanium is highly resistant to stress and can handle higher loads without bending or breaking. This makes it ideal for users who need a sturdy, reliable wheelchair for both everyday activities and physical sports.
  • Lightweight: Despite its strength, titanium is lighter than steel, which makes it easier to handle and maneuver, especially in active scenarios.
  • Corrosion-Resistant: Titanium is naturally resistant to corrosion, making it a great choice for individuals who live in humid environments or those who frequently use their wheelchair outdoors.
  • Comfort and Performance: The resilience of titanium ensures that the chair remains stable even under stress, which improves both the user’s comfort and the wheelchair’s overall performance. It provides a smoother, more responsive ride compared to other metals.

3. Carbon Fibre

What is Carbon Fibre?

Carbon fiber is a composite material made from thin, strong fibres of carbon that are woven together and bound with resin. It’s one of the most advanced materials used in the construction of active wheelchairs, particularly for athletes and those looking for top-notch performance.

Benefits of Carbon Fibre Frames:

  • Incredibly Lightweight: Carbon fibre is one of the lightest materials used in wheelchair construction. This makes the wheelchair extremely easy to propel and manoeuvre, reducing the effort required for movement and making it ideal for active users.
  • Strength and Rigidity: Despite its lightness, carbon fibre is incredibly strong and rigid, offering excellent power transfer when the user pushes the chair. It doesn’t flex like some other materials, which provides a more efficient, stable ride.
  • Durability: Carbon fibre is highly durable, and although it may not be as impact-resistant as titanium or steel, it’s extremely resistant to fatigue and stress, making it perfect for active use.
  • Enhanced Performance: Carbon fibre’s combination of low weight and high strength makes it a favourite among wheelchair athletes, as it allows for quick, responsive movements and minimal energy loss during propulsion.
  • Sleek Aesthetic: In addition to its performance benefits, carbon fibre has a modern, sleek appearance that many users find appealing.

Customization Options for Active Wheelchairs

Active wheelchairs are highly customisable so they can meet the users individual needs and preferences. Options include;

  • Seat Width and Depth: Adjusting the seat width and depth ensures that the user is properly supported and that their posture is aligned. This is essential for preventing discomfort and pressure sores over time.
  • Wheel Size: Active wheelchairs typically offer different wheel sizes (12-inch, 14-inch, 24-inch, etc.). Larger wheels tend to offer better performance on rough terrain and more speed, while smaller wheels are ideal for manoeuvrability and urban environments.
  • Tires: Tires come in various types, such as pneumatic (air-filled) tires or solid tires. Pneumatic tires are better at absorbing shocks and providing a smoother ride, while solid tires offer greater durability and require less maintenance.
  • Footrests and leg rests; The footrests and leg rests of a wheelchair can be customized for added comfort and support, as well as for the user’s specific mobility needs. Customisations include adjustable footrests, fixed, swing-away or removable footrests and elevating leg rests.
  • Backrests and cushioning; The backrest and cushioning of the wheelchair provide essential support to the user’s spine, lower back, and posture. Customizing these components ensures comfort and can help reduce the risk of developing pressure sores.
  • Armrests: The armrests on a wheelchair provide additional support for the user’s arms and can assist with transferring in and out of the chair. Customization allows for different heights, shapes, and materials for added comfort.

Excellent Customer Service from Alex, Hayley and Mike at ARB Mobility. They couldn't have done more to help me. My broken elderly Rollator was soon sorted and back in use again. It's such a 'find' to have someone who can mend things. They are knowledgeable and in tune with all manner of mobility issues and have a well stocked showroom catering for a broad range of needs. The scooter we chose and ordered was available for us to collect within 48 hours, all set up and ready to go. We can't thank them enough for all their help and can thoroughly recommend ARB Mobility of Ruishton to anyone who needs any of theirmobil

Absolutely brilliant!! Alex was fantastic! I was looking at getting a top of the range power wheelchair with an NHS voucher and top up. Alex arranged a home visit with the company, they were both friendly but professional and personable, as a disabled female, it can be quite daunting to have two men come to your home but I can hand on heart say what lovely chaps! Together they talked me through the benefit of this wheelchair but also any cons. I was in the process of arranging the money when Alex contacted me to say an ex demo one was available. It was a few £k cheaper but it was almost brand spanking new and would be modified FOC to my specs. Alex and the supplier came to adjust it to me on delivery and made sure I was happy with controls, how it worked and that everything was comfortable before they left. Alex, you’re an absolute legend!

It was clear from the outset that ARB Mobility had an impressive, wide range of mobility scooters on offer, and in a very short time identified a scooter that suited my needs. The proprietors were kind, courteous and above all, friendly. Sterling all round service! I would most certainly recommend this company. Thank you.

Alex and the team are very local to us and he is a great guy to help out when needed. My wife and I are relatively new to this scooter business but in a short time we have found that there seems to be quite a few unreliable suppliers online with very poor customer service. That is the opposite of what we have experienced with Alex and we don't mind paying a bit extra compared to online when we get such kind, reliable service.

We needed a mobility scooter and wheelchair but we didn’t know which ones would be most suitable. Alex was very helpful in helping us decide on the best options and we are pleased that we have bought from him. Wonderful service and no hard sell - he was just trying to do the best for us. Thanks Alex.
